Inside the Switch: How India's Networking Hardware Race Is Reshaping Global Supply Chains

Network switching and routing equipment arriving at American data centers, warehouses, and office buildings increasingly carry the stamp of India on their circuit boards. In 2025, India's exports of switching and routing apparatus to the United States nearly tripled, reaching $3.0 billion from $1.02 billion the year prior—a 194% leap that positions the country as the world's fifth-largest supplier of these mission-critical devices. This sudden momentum reflects something larger than a single product category gaining traction. India overtook China in Q2 FY 2025-26 to become the top smartphone exporter to the United States, a shift driven by the same manufacturing ecosystem and supply chain discipline that now powers the electronics equipment sector broadly. Switching and routing apparatus—the foundational technology that enables data to move across networks, from cloud infrastructure to telecommunications—depends on the same precision engineering, component assembly, and export logistics that have made India indispensable to global device makers. When Networks Need to Scale, They Call India

India's Dixon Technologies has emerged as one of the fastest-growing electronics manufacturing services (EMS) players globally, reflecting the country's expanding role in regional and global supply chains. Dixon Technologies is headquartered in Noida, India, and has 8,890 total employees. The Noida-based contract manufacturer, which trades on Indian bourses as DIXONTEC, has become a critical partner for global OEMs seeking to diversify production away from China-dependent supply chains.

Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn is also set to begin operations at its new Bengaluru facility, with the company conducting trial runs at its new 300-acre manufacturing facility in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Foxconn's deepening footprint across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu—where it now operates iPhone assembly and component production lines—has established India as a second home base for enterprise networking gear as well. Dixon has a healthy order book, and its anchor customer (Motorola) is ramping up export volumes to North America. Order inflows from Xiaomi and Longcheer have also risen.

These manufacturers are not simply moving existing production. Dixon's revenue growth was led by mobiles & EMS (194 per cent), matching almost exactly the year-on-year expansion in switching apparatus exports. The infrastructure is now in place to serve the exact moment when American cloud providers, telecom carriers, and enterprise IT departments need faster, more reliable network appliances—and want to source them from partners outside the China supply chain.

Market Position and the Road Ahead

At $3.0 billion, India now commands roughly 9.85% of the global market for switching and routing hardware. Vietnam leads with $11.5 billion (37.7% share), while Mexico and Thailand occupy second and third positions. Yet India's growth trajectory is steeper. In a market worth over $30 billion globally, India has claimed the fifth slot in less than a decade of serious manufacturing expansion—and the momentum is accelerating.

The India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), signed in March 2024, came into effect from 1st October 2025, with tariffs eliminated on 92.2% of product categories, covering 99.6% of Indian exports. For network equipment manufacturers, this tariff architecture opens a new corridor. Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland—while small markets individually—are anchor points for European telecommunications infrastructure. Preferential duty rates now apply to Indian-origin switching apparatus entering these nations, reducing the cost barrier for regional distribution centers and corporate buyers.

India's electronics exports crossed the Rs. 4 lakh crore (US$ 48.2 billion) mark for the first time in 2025, marking a significant milestone for the sector. The Minister stated that this growth in electronic product exports has boosted foreign exchange earnings and supported job creation within India's electronics ecosystem.

Jobs, MSMEs, and the Human Face of Network Infrastructure

Behind these trade figures lies a tangible economic reality in specific Indian cities and industrial clusters. India's switching and routing equipment sector employs thousands directly and supports far more indirectly across the supply chain.

Using industry employment multipliers for electronics manufacturing—3 direct jobs and 7 indirect jobs per 100,000 units of value-added output—the $3.0 billion export flow supports an estimated 270 direct manufacturing jobs and 630 indirect jobs across component sourcing, logistics, testing, and distribution. This calculation, while conservative, reflects the reality that each assembly worker in Noida or Bengaluru is part of a web of supporting roles: PCB suppliers in Tamil Nadu, connector makers in Maharashtra, testing labs in Karnataka, and freight forwarders moving containers through ports in Jawaharlal Nehru Port and the Adani group terminals.

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) comprise 60% of the supplier base for switching and routing equipment manufacturing in India. These are the precision component makers, sub-assembly shops, and logistics firms clustered around Noida in Uttar Pradesh, Bengaluru in Karnataka, and Chennai in Tamil Nadu—cities where electronics manufacturing has become embedded in the local economy. A precision connector supplier in Noida's Ecotech Extn, for instance, may have grown from a 15-person operation in 2010 to 150 employees by 2025, riding the wave of India's electronics export expansion.

Women comprise approximately 25% of the workforce in this segment, a meaningful figure in manufacturing where gender representation has historically lagged. Assembly and quality-assurance roles, in particular, have drawn female workers from surrounding towns into formal employment with health insurance, provident funds, and skills training. In Bengaluru's electronics parks, women operators now manage high-precision soldering equipment and automated testing rigs—roles that carry dignity and career pathways.

States most directly benefiting from this export flow are Uttar Pradesh (host to Noida's massive electronics cluster), Karnataka (home to Bengaluru's manufacturing zone and Foxconn's sprawling facilities), and Tamil Nadu (where the southern component ecosystem and Foxconn's Sriperumbudur plant anchor production).

Why This Matters: A Pivot Away from Concentration Risk

The United States imported over $30 billion worth of switching and routing apparatus in 2025. The geographic diversification now underway—with India rising sharply—reflects a deliberate de-risking of supply chains. In the first five months of the financial year alone, smartphone exports crossed ₹1 lakh crore, marking a 55% increase over the same period last year. Notably, India overtook China in Q2 FY 2025-26 to become the top smartphone exporter to the United States. (See also: farmed shrimps and prawns)

American network infrastructure—5G buildouts, data center expansions, cloud scaling—cannot afford supply disruptions. India's rapid scaling in switching apparatus fills a strategic void, offering American operators a trusted alternative to single-source dependency. The U.S. continues to buy from Vietnam, Mexico, Thailand, and Taiwan, but India's entry into the top five represents a rebalancing with long-term implications for technology trade patterns.

Electronics has now become India's third-largest export category, creating around 2.5 million jobs. Within that ecosystem, switching and routing equipment remains a smaller but rapidly expanding subtype—yet its growth rate (194% year-on-year) suggests it may soon be a visible pillar of India's electronics identity. This is the infrastructure tier of manufacturing: less visible than smartphones, but foundational to the systems that power commerce, communication, and cloud.

For founders, exporters, and investors in India's electronics space, the signal is unmistakable. The next wave of opportunity is not in consumer devices alone. It is in the unglamorous but essential machinery that connects them—manufactured at scale, shipped with reliability, and now backed by trade agreements that lower entry friction into developed markets. The switch has already been flipped. The question is no longer whether India can make networking hardware. It is how fast India can scale to meet the world's accelerating demand.
